e-Learning executive, podcaster, pharmacologist, motorcyclist and militant optimist

BACKGROUND

I have a Bachelors Degree in Biology from Temple University in Philadelphia. Later, while studying graduate biomedical engineering at Drexel University, I was a technician in the first Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, PA.

My doctorate is in Pharmacology from Temple University School of Medicine. While not a clinician, I had the same course of study as medical students in their first two years, followed by three additional years to complete my Ph.D. dissertation in neuropharmacology research, and finally, three more Post-Doctoral years.

After working for several years in industrial toxicology, I became the founding director of the Office of Academic Computing at Thomas Jefferson University. I also taught my specialty, pharmacokinetics, to sophomore medical students and graduate students in biomedical sciences at Drexel University.

I've published numerous scientific articles, co-authored a book, edited a study guide for med students, wrote software for pharmacology research, and taught pharmacology to medical and graduate students for over 30 years.

I have always been an early adopter of educational technology, especially relating to the Internet and World Wide Web, presenting at the 2nd International WWW Conference in 1994.

My latest position was as the Director of Online Learning at USciences Online, a new division of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia that I helped launch. My team was responsible for learning management systems, instructional design, online course development, and technology training for faculty and staff.

I have also produced a monthly e-learning technology podcast, Rod’s Pulse Podcast, for over 15 years, which is syndicated as The Pulse on Inside Higher Ed.
